Petrified wood, also known as fossilized wood, is a special type of rock that forms when wood is converted into minerals over a long period. It is formed through the process of fossilization, in which organic material like wood is replaced by minerals such as quartz, calcite, or pyrite.
The process of petrified wood begins when the wood becomes buried under sediments, such as mud, sand, or volcanic ash. Over thousands or millions of years, the organic materials in the wood are slowly broken down and replaced by minerals present in the groundwater. The minerals gradually penetrate the wood and preserve the structure of the original wood, creating a stone-like material.
