This fossilized shark tooth dates back to the Late Cretaceous, approximately 75 million years ago. During that period, large predatory sharks swam in the shallow seas that covered parts of present-day Morocco. Deposits of sand, silt, and limestone eventually allowed the tooth to become fossilized.
Most teeth from this region belong to prehistoric species from the Otodontidae or Cretolamna families, ancestors of later large predatory sharks. Because sharks continuously replace their teeth, fossilized teeth are relatively common, but complete and well-preserved specimens remain popular with collectors.
