Fossil coral, also known as agatized coral or coral agate, is a type of fossil formed by the petrification processes of ancient coral reefs. Fossil coral originates from the calcium skeletons of colonies of sea anemones and corals, which have been mineralized over time. The original organic materials of the coral are replaced by minerals, such as silicon dioxide (quartz), creating the fossil. This process can take millions of years.
