Piritized ammonite fossil. What an impressive specimen! One side has been ground flat, revealing the chambers inside. Origin is Mikhailov, Ryazan region, Russia. Approximately 160 million years old, dating back to the Jurassic period when dinosaurs roamed the earth!

It is a fossil of an ammonite, an extinct sea creature that displays a unique luster and play of colors due to the minerals deposited within the fossil. Ammonites are related to squid and nautiluses, and their fossils can be found in rocks that are hundreds of millions of years old.

Pyrite, also known as "fool's gold," is often mistaken for real gold because of its shiny, metallic appearance.
