Fossil coral, also known as agatized coral or coral agate, is a type of fossil formed through the petrification of ancient coral reefs. Fossil coral originates from the limestone skeletons of colonies of sea anemones and corals, which have mineralized over time. The original organic materials of the coral are replaced by minerals, such as silicon dioxide (quartz), forming the fossil. This process can take millions of years.
